You've Outgrown Basic Business Banking. What's Next?

5 Blind Spots Costing Growing Businesses Real Money

Post 1 of 5

There's a moment in a growing business when the banking setup that worked fine in the beginning starts quietly working against you. You're writing more checks than you'd like to admit. Money sits in a checking account earning next to nothing. Payments to vendors and from customers still run through a mix of paper and manual online entry.

If any of that sounds familiar, you're not alone, and you're not necessarily doing anything "wrong" by still operating this way. But you are likely leaving money, time, and fraud protection on the table. That's what treasury management is built to fix, and despite the name, it's not just for large corporations with finance departments.

The Signs Your Business Has Outgrown a Standard Checking Account

A few patterns tend to show up right around the point where a business has meaningful cash flowing through it:

  • Money is building up in a low- or no-interest checking account because there hasn't been time to think about where else it should sit.
  • Payments (both what you send and what you collect) still involve manual steps: printing checks, re-entering invoice data, chasing down customers who haven't paid.
  • You've had a close call, or worse, with payment fraud, a vendor email that looked legitimate until it wasn't, or a wire that almost went to the wrong account.
  • You're not entirely sure how much of your money is actually FDIC-insured if your balances have grown past $250,000.
  • You're spending hours a week on tasks that feel like they should be automated.

None of these are signs of a poorly run business. They're signs of a business whose banking hasn't kept pace with its growth, which is a common problem with a straightforward fix.

What Treasury Management Actually Means

"Treasury management" sounds like something reserved for companies with a CFO and a finance team. In practice, it's a set of tools and services built around a much simpler idea: helping businesses move, protect, and grow their money more efficiently. For a business owner, that typically means:

  • Automating payments you're currently making or receiving manually.
  • Protecting those payments from a growing and increasingly sophisticated set of fraud tactics.
  • Getting paid faster by giving customers more ways to pay you.
  • Making sure idle money is earning something instead of sitting flat.
  • Ensuring larger balances are fully protected, not just up to the standard FDIC limit.

None of this requires a finance department. It requires a bank willing to set it up for a business to scale, which is exactly the gap a lot of growing businesses fall into. They are too big to keep running everything by hand, or not yet at the size where a bank actively brings these tools to them.

What's in This Series

Over the next few weeks, we'll walk through tools that make the biggest difference for businesses in this stage of growth:

Stop Managing Payments by Hand: Automating Payables and Receivables How ACH (Automated Clearing House) and automated invoicing can cut the manual work out of paying vendors and collecting from customers.

The Fraud Risk Growing Businesses Don't See Coming Why fraud  increasingly occurs to businesses right as their payment volume grows, and the controls that help mitigate it.

Get Paid Faster: Merchant Services and Merchant Source Capture How to shrink the gap between making a sale and having that money actually usable in your account.

Your Money Should Be Working Even When You're Not Watching It How sweep accounts put idle money to work automatically, and how ICS accounts extend FDIC coverage well beyond the standard limit.

A Quick Self-Check: Is It Time for a Treasury Conversation?

If you answer yes to two or more of these, it's worth a conversation:

  1. Do you have large balances in combined business accounts?
  2. Are you still manually entering or paying invoices?
  3. Have you had any concerns about payment fraud, even ones that didn't result in a loss?
  4. Do you know exactly how much of your money is FDIC-insured right now?
  5. Would faster access to customer payments meaningfully change your cash position?

If that's you, the rest of this series is written for you.
